Students enrolled at UK College of Dentistry face an intense curriculum and rigorous clinic schedule. However, one of their hardest challenges is dealing with the cost of dental school. Past graduates may remember the expense of their own education as manageable. Unfortunately, today’s students are facing higher tuition and other expenses, while having little time to also carry a part-time job. This financial burden not only prevents students from enrolling and remaining at UKCD, but also limits their choices following dental school as they consider the additional costs of continuing their education to become a specialist or taking a loan to start a private oral health practice, especially in a rural area.
The UKCD fund being highlighted in One Day for UK is the College of Dentistry Scholarship. The College of Dentistry Scholarship makes sure that dental education is accessible to students who wish to be dentist. The scholarship goes to entering 1st year student dentists from an underrepresented population, based on academic potential as seen in his or her past academic performance. Basically, this scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted into the DMD program and may need assistance to actually enter the program. Under-represented is not just minority. It can include other considerations that would enhance the field of dentistry.
The College of Dentistry Scholarship provides a vehicle for alumni to join as one in encouraging students to consider the dental profession and pursue their dream. For the 2021-2022 school year UKCD Scholarship funding was provided to 10 first-year students, with students receiving awards to assist with their education.
Please help encourage the next generation of dentists to join the oral health field by making a gift to support the College of Dentistry Scholarship Fund.
